The Indian Paralympic Contingent returning with a staggering 19 medals which is their best ever tally in a single Paralympic Games.
This scintillating haul includes a creditable 5 gold medals, 8 silver medals, and 6 bronze medals. For the first time, India finished inside the top 25 at the Paralympic Games.
India’s tally of 19 medals is also the country’s best haul at any multi-sport event at the world level. India has gone past the tally of 13 medals they registered at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics.
This has been a watershed year in Indian Sporting history. In the Tokyo Olympics where able-bodied athletes compete India ended up with a haul of 7 medals including a gold.
Whereas, now it has 19 medals to show for the trip to the Tokyo Paralympics.
India had participated for the first in the Paralympics in the year 1968. Since then till the 2016 Rio Paralympics, the country of 1.4 billion people could only manage 12 medals.
But with a jaw-dropping haul of 19 medals in Tokyo, the bar has been set really high for the Paris Paralympics in 2024.
The medal haul though was along the expected lines considering the pedigree of the para-athletes. It consisted of athletes who already were multiple Paralympics gold medallists to a host of athletes who were world no.1 in their disciplines.
Special mention needs to be given to Avani Lekhara who would be India’s flag-bearer in the closing ceremony.
The 19-year-old para shooter would come home with a gold and a bronze medal to show for her trip to Tokyo. Another para shooter Singhraj Adhana won a silver and a bronze in two separate shooting disciplines.
