The Victoria batter played an innings of 437 runs against Queensland in 1927 to better his own highest score of 429 runs. Ponsford’s knock of 429 runs is still the sixth highest individual score in first-class cricket which came in 1923 against Tasmania. On both occasions, Ponsford hit a total of 42 fours and nil sixes.
4) Bhausaheb Nimbalkar (India)
The keeper-batsman from Kolhapur, Maharashtra smashed 443 runs against Kathiawar in a first-class game in 1948. Nimbalkar remained not out till the end of his marathon innings in Pune. He hit as many as 49 boundaries along with a solitary six. With his innings of 443 runs, Nimbalkar stands at number four in the list of top 5 highest individual scores in an inning of a first class game.
3) Donald Bradman (Australia)
Sir Donal Bradman, too, features in this elusive list. He scored 452 runs for New South Wales in the game against Queensland in 1930. Bradman was in some form during the course of the innings as it took just 465 deliveries for him to score those runs. Also, he successfully managed to stay unbeaten till the very end of the NSW innings. Sir Bradman’s dream innings included 49 fours.
2) Hanif Mohammad (Pakistan)
Pakistani batsman Hanif Mohammad played an unbelievable knock of 499 runs in a first-class game against Bahawalpur. Playing for Karachi, Hanif achieved the feat in 1959. He was extremely unlucky to get out on 499 but he is still admired for his extraordinary innings. Hanif hit a total of 64 fours in his innings.

1) Brian Lara (West Indies)
Brian Lara, who went on to top the charts for test cricket, tops this list too. In the county game against Durham in 1994, Lara played an exquisite innings of 501 runs for Warwickshire. Not only did Lara hit 62 fours, but he also sent 10 deliveries directly over the rope. Excitingly, he took just 427 balls to breach the 500 runs mark. Lara is the only cricketer to score 500 runs in an innings of a first-class game and also to reach the 400 runs mark in a test innings. This county game was played in Birmingham.
