Sydney Stadium History

On the verge of formation since 1809, the first Test match was played at the SCG between 17 February and 21 February 1882. In 1894 the ground finally received its modern name, the Sydney Cricket Ground. Don Bradman first went to the stadium to see the fifth test of the Australia vs England series in the 1920–21 season. The cricket season of 1928–1929 was the biggest. In December 1928, Australia and England played in front of the SCG’s record-breaking crowd of 58,446 spectators. In recent times, SCG was the venue of two 5-0 Ashes clean sweeps (completed in early 2007 and 2014). Australia recorded their 1,000th victory in international cricket on January 12, 2019, when they defeated India by 34 runs in the opening one-day international at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The planned budget for construction and renovation increased by $99 million after John Holland was given a $735 million contract in December 2019. The stadium was finished and inaugurated on August 28, 2022. This stadium’s entire construction cost was A$828 million.
