Wasn’t flat at all (the pitch). Was a wicket where you’re never quite in. Came back, had a week of training in Paarl. First game – just trying to find some rhythm. Was still trying to find my feet and then in the second ODI found my rhythm. Get home now for some daddy duties.
Quinton de Kock after the match
First Innings
South Africa lost an early wicket as Malan was caught behind on Chahar’s ball. Temba Bavuma also went back to the pavilion early in the innings. Not running straight cost him his wicket, as KL Rahul had hit the wicket, just in time. The first powerplay ended at 53/2. Substitute Gaikwad caught a brilliant catch, ending Aiden Markram’s innings. This slowed down SA, but the opener Quinton de Kock was rock solid in the innings. A few misfields on Jayant Yadav’s bowling made it easy for SA. He created chances for both the in-form players-de Kock and Van Der Dussen. Quinton de Kock scored his 6th ODI ton against India.
India’s star bowler, Bumrah, got them relief from Quinton’s wrath, Dhawan caught the ball, sending him back at 124 of 130. Van der Dussen quickly followed 52 of 59, caught by Shreyas on Chahal’s delivery. Miller and Dwaine Pretorius made the final touches scoring 39 and 20 respectively. South Africa had put a competitive total of 287 in 49.5 overs.
Second Innings
India had a good start despite skipper KL Rahul’s early wicket. Virat and Shikhar were hitting well. The match was going slightly in India’s favor. Shikhar completed his fifty in 18 overs. Even Kohli was smashing the balls. South Africa got the wicket they were desperately looking for in the 23rd over. Shikhar Dhawan was caught behind on Phehlukwayo’s delivery, going back In the 25th over, scoring 61 off 73 balls. Virat Kohli completed his fifty in 24.5 overs, he did a cradle celebration, dedicating it to his daughter. Just as Shreyas Iyer and Virat were trying to establish a partnership, SA was successful in sending Kohli back to the pavilion. Virat scored 65 off 84 deliveries. Shreyas and Suryakumar played their small contributions scoring 26 and 39 respectively.
Indian fans still have a lot of hope until Surya and Chahar were batting. Deepak Chahar was really good with the bat as well. He single-handedly had the capacity to make the final runs, had somebody just supported him. Bumrah played that role in the best way possible. Deepak Chahar added 54 off 34 balls to the country’s total. It was against Ngidi’s brilliant bowling that ended Chahar’s innings. Bumrah tried his best to make the few final runs. However, even he could not continue till the last over. Prasidh Krishna and Yuzvendra Chahal could not manage to score the remaining runs. India lost the match by 4 runs.
