Since the tournament’s inception in 2008. Every season there have been some player purchases which have witnessed heavy purse sheddings by the franchises. While some have justified their tag while some have turned out to be a trinket for the team. So let’s look at Most Expensive Players in each IPL season.
2022 – Ishan Kishan (15.25cr)
Ishan Kishan was sold to Mumbai Indians for Rs 15.25 crore this year. The young wicketkeeper-batsman from Jharkhand has made his name through a brand of attacking cricket. Kishan had finished the tournament as Mumbai Indians’ leading run-getter and the fifth-highest overall in the 2020 IPL. Ever since then he has been an impact player for the team. With decent keeping skills and occasional explosive batting, it was too much for MI to lose.
2021 – Chris Morris (16.25cr)
The 2021 players’ auction saw a new record getting set. The veteran South African all-rounder was sold for Rs 16.25 crore, becoming the costliest player in the IPL history. The Proteas alrounder was a subject of fierce bidding war which saw his value soar from a base price of INR 75 lakh to a whopping 16.25 crore. But Morris couldn’t do justice with the price tag as he got clumsy with the bat. And released from the franchise for 2022 auctions. After which he announced his retirement just before the auction.
2020 – Pat Cummins (15.50 cr)
The present Australian Test captain stole the limelight after KKR purchased him for a whopping amount of Rs 15.50 crore. The pacer had a decent season and remained associated with the franchise for the 2021 season and KKR bid him back in 2022 auction as well.
2019 – Jayadev Unadkat, Varun Chakravarthy (8.40cr Each)
The 2019 auction witnessed two new youngsters rising to glory and becoming the most expensive purchases of the season. Rajasthan Royals spent Rs 8.4 crore to get Jayadev Unadkat while Kings XI Punjab ( now Punjab Kings) spent the same amount to get the mystery uncapped spinner Varun Chakravarthy.
2017 & 2018 – Ben Stokes (14.50cr in 2017 & 12.50cr in 2018)
Another player to join the list of Most Expensive Players In Each IPL was Ben Stokes in 2018, English all rounder Stokes was picked by the Rajasthan Royals for 12.50cr. An year ago, in 2017 The Rising Pune Supergiants purchased England all-rounder Ben Stokes for Rs 14.5 crore.
2016 – Shane Watson (9.50cr)
The Seasoned Australian all-rounder was purchased by RCB for an amount of Rs 9.5 crores. He seemed to be a good pick and turned out to be the best season for the franchise as they made it to the third final but ultimately lost it.
2015 – Yuvraj Singh (15cr)
The World cup winning former all-rounder went for a whopping deal of Rs 15 crore from Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals). However, his association couldn’t do wonders for the team.
2014 – Yuvraj Singh (14cr)
The Royal Challengers Bangalore set a new record in 2014 beating KKR’s earlier purchase of Gambhir in 2011. Yuvraj bagged Rs 14 crore for his association with the franchise. But he remained with RCB for just one season and was released ahead of IPL 2015.
2013 – Glenn Maxwell (6.30cr)
Mumbai Indian purchased all-rounder Glenn Maxwell for Rs 6.30 crore in the mini auctions. However, his association with the franchise lasted for just one season due his inconsistent approach to the game.
2012 – Ravindra Jadeja (12.80cr)
Sir Jadeja’s long association with CSK began in 2012 when the franchise bought the left-arm all-rounder for a huge amount of Rs 12.8 crore.
2011- Gautam Gambhir (14.90cr)
2011 was the landmark that changed the scenario of Kolkata Knight Riders. They caught hold of Gautam Gambhir for Rs 14.9 crore and appointed him the new skipper. The purchase was worth every penny as in return Gambhir led the team to two IPL titles.
2010 – Shane Bond, Kieron Pollard (4.80 cr Each)
The former New Zealand pace legend Shane Bond got purchased in a mini auction by Kolkata Knight Riders while Kieron Pollard began his eternal association with Mumbai Indians. Both of them were purchased for Rs. 4.8 crore.
2009 – Kevin Pietersen, Andrew Flintoff (9.80 cr Each)
The ex England skipper stole the limelight at the 2009 auction as they grabbed deals worth Rs 9.8 crores each. Royal Challengers Bangalore bought Pietersen and appointed him as the captain while CSK got Flintoff on its side.
2008 – Mahendra Singh Dhoni (9.50cr)
The inaugural IPL was marked by the purchase of the inaugural T-20 World cup winning Captain M.S. Dhoni who fetched the maximum amount in the auction. He was the first player bought by the Chennai Super Kings for an amount of Rs 9.5 crore. And ever since then Dhoni and CSK have become synonyms of each other.
