Australia was not a major footballing nation until the turn of the century. Australia first qualified for the world cup in 1974 but then five consecutive times in 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022 in Qatar.
As promising and optimistic as the Socceroos may have looked, they have only managed to clear the group stage once in the 2006 edition of the World Cup where they lost 1-0 to eventual champions Italy in the round of 16. Apart from that, the Aussies have been eliminated in the group stage each coming year. Up until 2006, Australia used play qualifications under OFC (Oceania Football Federation) but later switched to AFC(Asian Football Confederation).
Australia has managed to impress fans on the global stage on a few occasions but never really proved its mettle. Known to be a nation with very few talented individuals like Tim Cahill in the past, the Socceroos will look to make a strong impression this time around. In their ranks, they possess some experienced and quality players like Captain Matt Ryan alongside Cadiz winger Awer Mabil, Celtic midfielder Aaron Mooy and Heart’s Nathaniel Atkinson.
