Switzerland is one of the most underrated teams during the world cup but often pose threat to the powerhouses of world football. During the precedented Euros in 2021, Switzerland impressed and shocked everyone by eliminating the current world champions in France in the penalty shootout. Â
Most recently, the Swiss got the better of Italy during the world cup qualifiers. Switzerland held Italy to a 1-1 and finished on top of their group earning direct qualification to the world cup. While Italy had to go through play-offs they eventually lost meaning they missed out on the Qatar World Cup. In the previous 2018 Russia edition of the tournament, Switzerland managed to finish in the 2nd spot behind Brazil, however, they were eliminated in the round of 16 by Sweden.
Qatar 2022 will mark the 12th World Cup appearance for the Swiss. Although Switzerland do have some quality players in their arsenals such as Yann Sommer, Shaqiri, Akanji, and Zakaria, they simply do not match the quality of the top sides. Hopefully, Captain Granit Xhaka can lead this ambitious side to a respectable finish.
