First Innings
England captain Joe Root won the toss in this Test Match and opted to field first in 5th Test Match. England made wholesale changes in their Playing XI. Rory Burns gets another chance in the laying XI. England started brilliantly with the ball in this Test Match. The top order rattled in the first innings. But then came Travis Head. He made a 150+ runs partnership with Cameron Green and stabilized the Australian innings. The conditions were favorable to bowlers so he decided to play an attacking game. He scored 101 runs of just 113 balls. Cameron Green also gave him brilliant support and got out after scoring 74 runs. The finishing touches were given by Nathon Lyon and Australia finishes at 303 runs. Mark Wood was very expensive from England.
England’s new opening pair took to the crease. The opening pair is new but the woes are still the same. England lost their first wicket on 2 runs. This time Rory Burns found run out as an option to get out. This was very immature from the England openers. Malan and Root stabilized the innings in the middle a bit but they got out in successive successive overs by Cummins. Chris Woakes also played an innings of 36 runs in the end and England scored just 188 runs. Cummins was exceptional from Australia. He took 4 important wickets. Starc was also good with three wickets. The situation is still the same for England batting lineup even after wholesale of changes. Their batting let them down in almost every match.
Second Innings
Australia have a handy lead of 115 runs going into the second innings. Australian openers, once again gave them a poor start and David Warner got out on a duck in both innings. The top order once again, can’t contribute much and Australia lost three top order batsmen in o time. England bowled really well in this innings. There was no support from the middle order or lower middle order too. Alex Carey was the highest run scorer for Australia with 49 runs. England really came back in the game with the help of their bowlers. For England, Mark Wood was just exceptional. He scalped 6 wickets and got the career best figures of 6-37 against the quality batting of Australia. Australia got dismissed for just 155 runs. England now have a target of 270 runs with more than two days play remaining.
This match gone at a very fast pace. England have to chase 271 runs with more than 2 days play still available. England openers gave them a perfect start. They got the first half century opening partnership in Ashes 2021-22 from both the teams. At one of time when England were 68 for no loss, it was looking England can chase that. But then came England’s best partner- Batting collapses. From 68-0 to 124-10. Camron Green bowled beautifully and break the partnerships. All the Australian bowlers were exceptional with Cummins, Boland, Green sharing three wickets each. And Australia won this match by 146 runs. With this win, Australia win the Ashes Series 4-0. England really had a horrifying last month. England now have serious planning to do to go ahead in Test Cricket.
