Virat Kohli sees a dip in his brand valuation, while MS Dhoni’s rises again

Kohli's brand value dipped after he stepped down as India and RCB captain

Indian cricketers occupy prime positions when it comes to earnings in the cricket world. Virat Kohli‘s brand valuation has reportedly taken a hit after he decided to give up the captaincy role. He had earlier hanged his boots from the Indian T20I captaincy. Analysing his performance in the T20 World Cup last year he decided to take the step. Moreover, he was removed as the ODI captain soon after.

Kohli then stepped down as India Test captain in 2022 after losing the Test series in South Africa. Give the baton to the Hitman, Rohit Sharma. Kohli, who is dawning  Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) colours in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, had also stepped down as the captain of the franchise after his side’s exit from the 2021 season.

According to a report filed by the Times of India, Kohli’s brand valuation has shrunk from around $238 million in 2020 to $186 million in the next year (2021). However, despite his brand valuation plunging to $186 million, Kohli has managed to secure the top spot in the top celebrity endorser list. This is the fifth consecutive time Kohli has secured the leading position in India’s top celebrity endorser list.

The report added that legendary Indian cricketer MS Dhoni has increased his brand value. Dhoni stepped down as CSK captain ahead of the IPL 2022. But he had led the franchise to their fourth title in IPL 2021.

“There were rumours that Dhoni quit the Indian Premier League (IPL). But he turned it around by taking Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to a win and transitioning to the role of a mentor for the national team.  Dhoni has become a timeless brand similar to Sachin Tendulkar,”
