Former Indian Batsman Sanjay Manjrekar talked about some of the best captains of the Indian team, according to him. He said that since we are living in a digital era. There is more hype than ever. But, that doesn’t outshine the efforts of some former Indian Captains. According to Manjrekar, if we are talking about the greatest of all times, mention of MSD, Ganguly, Kapil Dev, and Gavaskar becomes mandatory. Further, he talked about how Kapil Dev led India to win a World Cup at a time there was an inferiority complex at a global level. Sourav Ganguly’s leadership led to India winning a few matches overseas, following the match-fixing era. Thus, these captains are far better than Virat Kohli.

Although, Virat Kohli isn’t one of the best Indian Captains according to Sanjay Manjrekar. He praised Kohli’s attitude towards the game.

“When you look at Kohli, there are a lot of things to like about him because he is somebody who led by example. The Wanderers Test match before this series, when they played on a treacherous pitch. India lost the series 2-0 but Kohli set an example as captain. He said that we want to win this despite a pitch that could have killed somebody. That kept India’s morale high. That is what you get with Virat Kohli, the never-say-die attitude. In the World Test Championship final India lost. But till the last minute India through Virat Kohli was still fighting to salvage the game. But finally, you’ve got to talk about the results. The results were not coming.”

BCCI Vs Virat Kohli

"He should not be counted among greatest Indian captains" Sanjay Manjrekar takes a dig at Virat Kohli, makes controversial comment

Earlier this year, Virat left everyone shocked by leaving the Test captaincy. Not only his fans but the entire Cricket fraternity was startled by the news. this decision was followed by a series loss against South Africa. Kohli had resigned from the T2OI captaincy in September 2021. BCCI made an announcement removing Virat from the ODI captaincy. Virat’s fans were still happy that he will still be leading India in the longest format. However, their happiness was short-lived as Virat announced his resignation from Test cricket as well.

Many believe Virat has left the Test captaincy because of his ongoing issues with BCCI. Rifts between Virat Kohli and BCCI are not a secret anymore. There have been some issues going on. The manner in which Kohli was removed from the ODI captaincy caused much debate online. There is a clear miscommunication between BCCI and former skipper Kohli. This can be seen in the contrasting statements that were made. However, we can only hope that leaving captaincy would help Virat play his natural game in a more free manner.
