Costa Rica had missed World Cup football for 60 years since its inception in 1930 as they first qualified in the 1990 FIFA World Cup. However, in the 21st century, La Ticos have qualified for all editions of the tournament except for the 2010 edition in South Africa.
In 2014 Costa Rica came into the limelight at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. On 6 December 2013, Costa Rica, along with Uruguay, Italy, and England, were drawn in Group D, the only group in FIFA World Cup history to have three former world champions, who were in the top 10 rankings of FIFA at the time. Expectations for Costa Rica were fiercely low and the team was expected to finish 32nd.
Instead, La Ticos led the group unbeaten with two wins, one draw and just one goal conceded. After defeating Greece in the round of 16, they suffered a loss in the quarterfinals against the Netherlands. However, Costa Rica remained undefeated and conceded just two goals to remain among the top eight teams in the World Cup. The fewest of all participants in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Pundits around the globe ranked Costa Rica’s performance in 2014 as one of the biggest upsets in FIFA World Cup history. Such performances at the World Cup elevated Costa Rica’s standing on the international stage.
Under the leadership of Captain Keylor Navas, can the Costa Ricans pull another upset? We just have to wait and watch. Nonetheless, Costa Rica’s campaign in Qatar will not be easy.
