Argentina is and has been one of the most successful teams in world football. La Albiceleste has always been blessed to have iconic players including legends of the sport like Diego Maradona and current captain Lionel Messi. However, it has been more than three decades since Argentina was crowned world champion in 1986.
Argentina’s first world cup appearance came in 1930 when they managed to reach the finals only to lose to the hosts Uruguay. It was in 1978 when Argentina was made the host, that they won their first world cup by defeating Netherlands 3-1 in extra time. They repeated this feat in 1986 when the Maradona-led side defeated Germany to lift their second World Cup giving soccer fans around the world memories to cherish including the infamous “Hand of God” incident. Ever since then La Albiceleste has only managed to reach the finals twice (1990 and 2014).
Now, Captain, Lionel Messi has seen his dream of lifting the World Title broken year after year due to bad performances and unclear tactics. However, Argentina finally looks like a force to reckon with. Having recently won the Copa America in 2021, they have been on an unbeaten streak of 35 matches which began back in 2019. This winter in Qatar, Argentina will be firing on all cylinders as they aim for their first World Cup in 36 years.
