Ashwin overtakes Kapil Dev to become India’s Second Highest Wicket Taker in Test Cricket

Veteran Indian Spin King Ravichandran Ashwin gets another star on his uniform. Ashwin becomes India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the longest format of the game with 435 wickets. He is now only behind Anil Kumble (619) in the list of Indian bowlers with most dismissals in red-ball cricket.Only four Indian bowlers have taken more than 400 wickets in Test cricket.

Ashwin had earlier surpassed Harbhajan Singh in the elite list during India’s home series against New Zealand last year. He is also the fastest Indian bowler to reach the 50-, 100-, 150-, 200-, 250-, 300-, 350- and 400-wicket mark in Test cricket in terms of number of innings. With the new record, besides Kapil Dev, Ashwin has also overtaken Sir Richard Hadlee (431), Rangana Herath (433) and Dale Steyn’s (439) Wickets. 5. Ishant Sharma – 311 wickets

Existing Indian fast bowler Ishant Sharma gets 5th place on the list with 303 test wickets for India. Sharma played his first test in 2007, and lately established himself as a regular pacer of the longest format of the game, taking wickets with a competent average of 32.30. He is currently the most experienced pacer of the Indian side. He has completed 100 test matches as only the third fast bowler of India.

4. Harbhajan Singh – 417 wickets

Former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh also known as ‘Turbunator’ has bagged the 4th most number of wickets (417) for India in Tests. Singh’s cricketing span lasted for 18 long years from his debut in 1998 till 2008. Harbhajan is the first Indian off-spinner to get 400 test wickets. He used to constantly pick wickets and gave India the breakthrough they needed in very critical situations.

3. Kapil Dev – 434 wickets

The first Indian World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev has grabbed the 3rd most number of wickets (434) for India in tests. He debuted in Tests in 1978 against Pakistan and played till 1994. Kapil is the only all-rounder on the list. He is also the first Indian first bowler in history to take 400 test wickets. Today, Ashwin become India Second Highest Wicket Taker overtaking Kapil Dev who has been on that position for quite some time now.

2. Ravichandran Ashwin – 435 wicket

Promoting himself a rank above with today’s performance Ashwin overtook Kapil dev’s record. While Ashwin achieved the feat in his 85th match, Kapil Dev had managed it in 131 matches. Ashwin made his test debut in 2011 and after his stint in ODIs and T20s, Ashwin has lately been an anchor of Indian test spin bowling. Ashwin is known for bowling on the same spot with several variations. He has been pretty good with the bat as well with over 10580 test runs including 5 centuries.

1. Anil Kumble – 619 Wickets

Former Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble has taken the most number of wickets (619) in tests for India. Kumble made his test debut in 1990 against England. His cricketing tenure lasted for 19 years till 2008. Kumble was a spinner with unusual quick pace and would bowl wicket to wicket in order to take the batsman into his trap with slight spin. Anil is also the third-highest wicket-taker in the history of red ball cricket.
