Rasheed’s training academy was 50 kilometres from his house in Guntur. Shaik Balisha, his father, used to drive him the entire trip on his scooter. Every day. He used to make certain that his son didn’t miss a class. Rasheed’s father lost jobs, struggled to make ends meet at times, and had to relocate, yet he never lost sight of his son’s aspiration. Rasheed’s abilities were obvious from an early age, but due to his family’s terrible financial position, he couldn’t afford to fund his training and studies in addition to paying rent.

Balisha was at a loss for what to do next. His son had talent, but it was a matter of polishing it and providing him with a platform. Local academies’ prices were too high for him to attend. But he was determined to find a solution. He began taking Rasheed to a cricket venue six kilometres from his home in 2012 and began throwing him down. He learned about the Andhra Cricket Association’s residential cricket programme a few months later and decided to give Rasheed a tryout. Rasheed took advantage of the situation and made the most of it.

He was the second-highest run-getter in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy (2020-21), with 376 runs in six matches.

The U-19 Cricket World Cup, however, was the real reckoning and coming of age for Shaik Rasheed. His tireless efforts and his father’s sacrifices were given a meaning. As he became a cornerstone in the title triumph. Rasheed made his mark, and what better stage than U-19 Cricket World Cup, where the modern Indian greats have all started their journeys.
