Delhi Capitals make early exits from IPL 2024!

The David Warner-led Delhi Capitals became the first team to be knocked out of IPL 2024. They lost to Punjab Kings by 31 runs and stayed at the bottom of the table with eight points. On Saturday, Punjab won the toss and elected to bat first. With the help of Prabhsimran Singh (103 runs off 65 balls) maiden hundred posted 167/7. In reply, Delhi Capitals collapsed on 138/8. Once Delhi was in the driving seat when they scored 69/1 in 6.2 overs. For Delhi, Warner played a magnificent inning of 54 off 27 balls. After this unexpected loss from a winning position, Delhi Capitals have officially been knocked out of IPL 2024. Now, DC have two matches to play against CSK and PBKS. DC may like to win both matches before departing IPL this season.

If we talked about the journey of Delhi Capitals, then it was not good. Delhi lost their five matches in a row. But, they ended a five-match winless streak. They registered their first win with a four-wicket against KKR at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Out of the next seven matches, DC won four and showed their strength that they could come back stronger. But it had been too late. DC showed their strength against RCB at Arun Jaitley Stadium, where they defeated RCB by 7 wickets. DC chased down a mammoth 181 target in just 16.4 overs. Phil Salt played a magnificent inning of 87 off 47 with 8 fours and 6 sixes. After that, they lost two matches against CSK and PBKS by 27 and 31 respectively.

So far DC has played 12 matches out of which they have won only 4. They are present at the bottom of the table with 8 points and a -0.686 net run rate. Let us have a look at the reasons why DC got knocked out of the TATA IPL 2024.

1. Fragile Middle Order!

The middle order of Delhi Capitals was entirely based on domestic players like Sarfaraz Khan, Abishek Porel, Manish Pandey, Priyam Garg, Lalit Yadav and Amlan Khan. Due to Rishabh Pant’s injury, Sarfaraz had the opportunity this season. But so far, he hasn’t been able to deliver a good performance. He has played 4 matches and scored only 53 runs with an average of 13.25. While talking about Manish Pandey who was also struggling with bad form. This season Manish Pandey played 10 matches and scored 160 runs in 9 Innings. His average was 17.78 and his highest score was 50.

2. Misfiring Overseas contingent!

DC management was relying on overseas stars such as Rilee Rossouw and Mitchell Marsh. But they all seem failed. After an excellent performance for South Africa in T20Is, DC had high expectations from Rossow before IPL 2024. But, in seven matches this year, he scored just 127 runs with an average of 21.17. Mitchell Marsh seemed impressed with the ball. He picked up 12 wickets in nine matches at an economy rate o/f 8.43. However, his returns with the bat were ordinary. In nine matches, he scored 128 runs at an average of 14.22 with a half-century.

3. Holding Axar back!

Axar Patel was the only player who was in good form with both the bat and the ball. This year, Patel has scored 268 runs in 12 matches at a strike rate of 137.44. He also picked up 10 wickets with a fine economy of 6.80. Throughout this season, he came in to bat at No. 7 or No. 8 and controlled his team in bad situations. There was a need to promote him up in the batting order to utilize his form and potential to the fullest. The results of at least 2–3 matches for DC could have been different if Patel was sent up.
