Gururaja Poojary wins his second consecutive Commonwealth medal. At Gold Coast in 2018, he won the silver medal in the Men’s 56 kg category. Now, he won India’s second medal in the event in the 61 kg weight class. Gururaja lifted 118 kg in the second attempt in the snatch round. Later, in the clean and jerk round he started with a 144 kg lift. In his second attempt, he lifted 148, and in the final attempt, he lifted 151 kg. Gururaja Poojary lifted an aggregate of 269 kgs and clinched a bronze medal in the CWG 2022.
Gururaja was competing with Youri Simard of Canada. However, he registered a close win by 1kg winning the bronze medal. It is funny how weightlifter Sanket Sargar won the Silver, missing Gold by 1kg.

Wishes poured in as India won its second medal. It is not a normal scenario where an athlete wins a medal in consecutive seasons of the Commonwealth Games. Poojary is widely hailed for the same. PM Narendra Modi congratulated him, saying “Overjoyed by the accomplishment of P. Gururaja! Congratulations to him for winning the Bronze at the Commonwealth Games. He demonstrated great resilience and determination. I wish him many more milestones in his sporting journey.”
