IPL mega auction’s riveting two-day affair finally came to an end this Sunday evening. All ten teams were to recognize their core players for the future. If the rumors are to be believed, then this might have been the last mega auction in IPL. As are the norms of every IPL auction, there were a lot of shocking decisions made on the auction tables. While some players dug gold, several players had to settle on an underpaying contract. In this article, we will discuss the 5 most overvalued players in IPL auction 2022.
5 Most overvalued players in IPL auction 2022
5) Liam Livingstone (11.50 Crores)
The explosive English middle-order batsman, Liam Livingstone, was bought by the Punjab Kings for a whopping sum of 11.5 crores. In a five-way bidding war, PBKS outbid their competitors to secure Livingstone’s services for IPL 2022. Livingstone made headlines during the England vs Pakistan T20I series and The Hundred tournament in 2021 with his blistering batting. But, his numbers do not justify the amount he received in the auction. Since June 2021, he has played 15 T20Is and has had a middling average of 27. Excluding his century against Pakistan, he has scored just 166 runs in 14 matches. Liam can, however, roll his arms over whenever the captain demands it from him. So, his all-around abilities intimidated the teams to after him at the auction.
4) Khaleel Ahmed (5.25 Crores)
Khaleel Ahmed’s auction price raised a lot of eyebrows in the auction room. The left-arm pace bowler hasn’t been in the best of forms since a few IPL seasons. Till 2021, he was a part of Sunrisers Hyderabad before the team decided to part ways with the bowler after four years. Apart from the Capitals, Mumbai Indians was the other team that was interested in Khaleel at the auction. But MI decided not to outbid Delhi and stopped bidding after Khaleel’s price shot over 5 crores. Without any disrespect to Khaleel’s abilities, we feel that he was one of the most overvalued players in IPL auction 2022.

3) Nicolas Pooran (10.75 Crores)
The vice-captain of the West Indian team in the limited-overs format, Nicolas Pooran, was bought for 10.75 crores by SRH. The hard-hitting middle-order batsman hasn’t been among the runs for West Indies in the recent past. He is one of the most inconsistent batsmen in the Caribbean team. On his day, he can score 70 runs in just 30 balls but on other days he ends up consuming too many dot balls. SRH, overall, had a decent auction but this move of their management was very difficult to understand.
2) Romario Shepherd (7.75 Crores)
Romario Shepherd is one of the newest faces in the West Indian T20I setup. He rose to fame after his performances for his CPL team, Guyana Amazon Warriors. He is an all-rounder who can smack the ball all around the park with the bat and pick crucial wickets with the ball. The only issue with him is his poor economy. He leaks runs at 8.87 RPO in T20s but for his national team, he gives away more than 11 runs per over. To add to the scepticism regarding his auction value, his batting numbers are not that great as well and he is yet to be tested against a good bowling line-up. So, certainly he was one of the most overvalued players in IPL auction 2022.

1) Rahul Tewatia (9 Crores)
Undoubtedly, Rahul Tewatia has to be the most overpriced player at the auction. Newcomers, Gujarat Titans bought him for a whopping 9 crores. Surprisingly, the other team to fight hard for Tewatia was Chennai Super Kings. Tewatia caught the limelight after he smacked KXIP’s pacer, Sheldon Cottrell, for 5 sixes in an over and snatched a victory out of the jaws of defeat for RR in 2020. In the same season, he won another game for his team which was played against SRH. However, he did not have a great season in 2021. He is a handy bowler who rarely bowled out his full quota of four overs for Rajasthan Royals. The team showed faith in his finishing abilities and duly backed him. However, his performances to date, certainly do not justify his price at the auction.
