Emma Raducanu retires from Korea Open semi-final with injury

The 2021 US Open Winner continues to struggle with injuries.

US Open 2021 Winner Emma Raducanu missed out on a place in the Korea Open final as she was forced to retire through injury in her semi-final. Emma Raducanu’s injury woes flared again as she was forced to retire in the final set of her semi-final at the Korea Open.

Playing against Latvian top seed Jelena Ostapenko, Raducanu looked comfortable in the first set but as the match went on her injuries took over. Raducanu had won the first set 6-4 before a medical time-out in the second set, which she then lost 6-3. Ostapenko was then leading 3-0 in the third with a double break before Raducanu retired with a glute injury.

British number one Raducanu, who was playing in her first semi-final of a regular WTA Tour event, has struggled with various injuries and has retired mid-match on a number of occasions since winning the US Open in 2021.

It was all the more frustrating for Raducanu, given she had been showing glimpses of her best in recent weeks after dismal previous results.

Raducanu had been working towards reaching her first final in a regular WTA Tour event after winning her three previous matches for the first time since the US Open last year. Raducanu had beaten Polish third seed Magda Linette in the quarter-finals to claim three wins in a row for the first time since her US Open victory last year.

The 19-year-old fell at the first hurdle in the defence of her US Open title last month and has slipped to 77th in the world rankings from a career-high of 10th. Winning the Korea Open would have assured her a return to the top 50.
