Iga Swiatek Named the Polish Sports Personality of the Year

The Przegld Sportowy newspaper of Poland felicitates a nominated sportsperson with the award annually and the winner of the title is decided by a public consensus.

A sensational run in the 2022 season of WTA has earned Iga Swiatek another blazing accolade. The 21-year-old Tennis star has been named the Polish Sports Personality of the year. Swiatek blazed through the 2022 WTA season winning the French Open and the US Open in the course. Subsequently, the Polish player wrapped up the season with a total of 8 titles in her account. Consequently, Iga Swiatek became the first tennis player in over 8 decades to receive the Polish Sports Personality of the Year award.

Iga Swiatek Becomes the First Tennis Player Since 1937 to Win the Polish Award

The Przegld Sportowy newspaper of Poland felicitates a nominated sportsperson with the award annually. This time, Iga Swiatek left behind the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Hubert Hurkacz, Mateusz Ponitka, and Adrian Meronk to clinch the title. In fact, former three-time winner of the award, Robert Lewandowski nominated Swiatek for the award this year. The winner of the title is decided by a public consensus.

Furthermore, Swiatek’s coach, Tomasz Wiktorowski has been named the Coach of the Year. The current World No. 1 became the first tennis player to win the title after Jadwiga Jedrzejowska in 1937. Recently, Iga Swiatek competed in the United Cup for Team Poland. The World No. 1 won 5 matches in the tournament before losing to Jessica Pegula in the semi-final. The young tennis star didn’t hide her disappointment at the defeat as she broke into a pool of tears post match. However, the 21-year-old is set to enter the oncoming Australian Open tournament as one of the favorites to win the Grand Slam.
