Rohit Sharma’s Future Test Captaincy Under Threat: Report

The WTC final loss against Australia has raised a big question on Rohit's Future Test captaincy. It will depend on his batting performance.

The WTC final loss against Australia has raised a big question on the Future Test Captaincy of Rohit Sharma. The BCCI’s selection committee could take a call this year as per senior sources in BCCI.

As a captain, the WTC Final was a big task for Rohit Sharma. It was also his first-ever task on overseas soil. No doubt Rohit Sharma has a fabulous record as a captain in IPL. In his captaincy, Mumbai Indians have won Five IPL trophies. But, in the WTC Final, India never matched the level of Australia under his captaincy. Australia thoroughly dominated the game at The Oval. India has to face a 209-run loss. It was India’s second successive loss in a WTC final. Under Rohit, this was the second failed shot at an ICC trophy after the 2022 T20 World Cup. Also Read: Najmul Shanto’s Hundred Helps Bangladesh To Score 362 On Day 1 against Afghanistan

According to a PTI report, Rohit is likely to lead the Indian side in their opener to the WTC 2024/25 cycle. Where they face West Indies in a two-match series. However, the selectors might take a big decision if Rohit fails to stand on the expectation as a batter in the two matches.

“These are baseless stuff that Rohit will be removed from captaincy. Yes, whether he will last the whole two-year WTC cycle is a big question. As he would be nearly 38 when the third edition ends in 2025,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity. “As of now, I believe that Shiv Sunder Das and his colleagues will have to take a call. This call will depend on his batting performance in the two Tests against West Indies.”

Further, he added, “After the West Indies, we have no Tests till December-end. So there is enough time for selectors to consider and make a decision. By then the fifth selector (new chairman) will also join the panel and can take a decision”. Also Read: Kamlesh Jain in line to be the head physio of India cricket team
