Presidents Cup 2022: Teams, Players, Rules, Format, Scoring System, And Coverage

The Golf enthusiasts waiting for over 2 years to satiate their game thirst will finally get to watch the Presidents Cup

The Presidents Cup is all set to return for its 14th season after a haphazard hiatus caused by the pandemic. The last season, back in 2019, of the biennial event, witnessed the US take over the International side for the 8th consecutive time. The event, before the pandemic-induced imbalance, was held in the odd years. And the Ryders Cup, in the even years. However, as the situation now stands, Presidents Cup 2022 will bring the event to the even-years slot. And the Ryders Cup will take the odd slot from now on.

The Presidents Cup features the US team and an International team facing off in a four-day event. The International team includes top-ranked players from all over the world, except for Europe and the US of course. Team US, however, gets to compete with the Europeans in the Ryders Cup. Moreover, the event’s template lets each team host the event alternately. The 14th season of the Presidents Cup is slated in the US. And the Quail Hollow Club of Charlotte, North Carolina is ready to host the international side.

Teams

Each team contains a roster of 12 players and a captain. The captain, as decided by the PGA tour for both sides, is in charge of picking up players. And also the potential combinations for the team matches. This year, Davis Love III will head the US team while Trevor Immelman of South Africa is appointed as the International Captain.

The US captain handpicks 6 players in the team, while the other six come automatically through the Presidents Cup rankings. These rankings are calculated over a period of two years which combine the FedEx Cup points to rank the players. The International team, however, includes 8 players based on the rankings.

The rankings are majorly based on the Official World Golf Rankings. And the captain, in turn, chooses the rest of the four players on the roster. However, in a twist, Immelman got to pick 6 players for this season. This is because two of the highest-ranking international players missed out on the Presidents Cup for the LIV game.

With a streak of 8 wins, the US is dominating the International side by a lot. The previous 13 seasons of the event have witnessed the US clinching victory in 12 seasons. The only win for the International side came back in 1998 in Australia. While the 2003 season in South Africa wrapped up in a tie.

The International team is clearly coming to North Carolina as the underdogs. And this tag isn’t solely because of the previous records. Major international names like Cameron Smith and Joaquin Niemann are missing out on the event for the LIV event. And their absence has caused the inclusion of eight President Cup rookies on the team. The US on the other hand has six of them.

Rules

The President Cup carries out 30 matches in a period of four days. Each match is valued at one point. 18 out of the 30 are team matches, which are Fourball and Foursome. And the rest 12 are singles. The host team gets to choose the formation. David Love III has decided to start the event with Foursomes followed by fourballs and singles on the final day. Each member of the team has to play at least a team and a single match.

Foursomes

Also known as alternate shots, this team game features two members of each side
pair in a team. And both of them take alternate shots of the same ball to win the hole. The team with the lowest scores (fewer strikes to hole the ball) wins the match.

Fourballs

Two members of each side pair in a team and set sight at the hole. However, in this
game, each member gets his own ball, thus “four” balls. The lowest score between both the
team members is taken into count. And the lowest between the opponent team gets the point for the match win.
