Zlatan Ibrahimovic Signs One-Year Extension with AC Milan

The forward has extended his deal to stay at AC Milan past his 41st birthday.

Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has signed a one-year contract extension with Serie A champions AC Milan, as confirmed by reliable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Zlatan rejoined the club in December 2019 after leaving MLS club LA Galaxy. He initially signed on a six-month contract with an option to extend a further year.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Career So Far

Malmö FF

Ibrahimovic initially signed with the youth team of Malmö FF in 1996, only to be promoted to the first team in 1999, going on to score 16 goals in 40 league appearances for the Di blåe in 3 years.

Ajax

Zlatan signed for Dutch giants Ajax in July 2001 for a deal worth €8.7 million. Despite receiving infrequent playing time at first, the introduction of Ronald Koeman aided his Ajax career as they won the Eridivise title in the 2001/02 season.

Juventus

His performances at de Godenzonen earned him a move to Italian club Juventus in the summer of 2004. Due to injury concerns for striker David Trezeguet, Zlatan was immediately promoted to the starting lineup, and he ended up scoring 16 goals that season as Juventus won the Scudetto in the 2004/05 season. But due to the Calciopoli scandal, Juventus were stripped off their last two Scudettos and were relegated to the second tier.

Inter Milan

Zlatan signed for Italian rivals Inter Milan for €24.8 million. During first season at I Nerazzurri, he finished the season as their top goalscorer with 15 goals, and helped them to the Scudetto with a record 97 points. In the following season, he helped Inter to a second consecutive league title, scoring 17 goals in 26 games and being awarded the Serie A Footballer of the Year and the Serie A Foreign Footballer of the Year.

During the 2008/09 season, Inter won the title for a third consecutive season, with Zlatan ending the season as the league’s top goalscorer with 25 goals. He was also named the Serie A Footballer of the Year and the Serie A Foreign Footballer of the Year for a second consecutive season.

Barcelona

Ibrahimovic signed with Catalunya club FC Barcelona in July 2009, for a reported fee of €46 million and a swap deal in exchange for striker Samuel Eto’o. In his first season with the Blaugrana, he became the first player ever to score in his first five league games, setting a new team record. Towards the end of the season, he started to fall off with coach Pep Guardiola, stating that the system change has restricted his freedom on the pitch.

AC Milan

The Swede initially joined the I Rossoneri on loan in the summer of 2010, but signed a four-year deal after passing his medicals. He helped Milan win the Scudetto that year, and ended the following season as the league’s top goalscorer with 28 goals in 32 matches.

Paris Saint-Germain

In July 2012, PSG had reached an agreement to sign Zlatan on a three-year deal for around  €20 million. He scored 30 goals in his debut season with Les Parisiens, leading Ligue 1 in scoring, and he assisted PSG in winning the league. With the same accomplishments the next season, he also earned the Ligue 1 Player of the Season title in the 2012/13 season.

In his final season with the club, he ended the season as Paris Saint-Germain’s top scorer in a single Ligue 1 season with 38 goals, and ended the season as the league’s top goalscorer as well, making it the third time he had done so in his 4 seasons in France.

Manchester United

Ibrahimovic signed with the Mancunian club for an initial one-year deal, with an option to extend for another season in the summer of 2016. In his first season with the Red Devils, he became the oldest player to manage at least 15 goals in a single Premier League season at the age of 35 years and 125 days, and helped them to the UEFA Europa League title in the 2016/17 season, which prompted Manchester United to extend his stay at the club for another season. His remaining time at the club was riddled with injuries and inconsistent performance which led the club to terminate his contract at the end of the 2017/18 season.

LA Galaxy

Zlatan signed with MLS club LA Galaxy in March 2018. In his debut match, he scored 2 goals which helped Galaxy overcome a 3-goal deficit and win the match 4-3 against against rivals Los Angeles FC. His goals were a 45m half volley and a stoppage time header. In his first season, he managed to be selected for the MLS All-Star game and was awarded the MLS Newcomer of the Year award.

He was named the club’s captain ahead of the 2019 season. He went on to score 26 goals and get selected for the MLS All-Star game and the MLS Best XI for a second consecituve season. In November 2019, he announced he would be leaving the club, only to return to AC Milan, where he won the Scudetto in the 2021/22 season.
