Ravindra Jadeja creates history, becomes highest scorer for India at 7th position by breaking Kapil Dev’s record

India is playing the first of 2 Tests against Sri Lanka at Mohali. Day 2 began with India having 357 runs with a loss of 6 wickets. Ashwin and Jadeja started the innings. However, Ashwin returned to the pavilion soon, scoring 61. Jayant Yadav couldn’t contribute much to India’s total. But it was Sir Jadeja, as he is widely referred to, who led India to a mammoth total of 574 runs. Ravindra Jadeja went on to become the highest scorer for India at the 7th batting position. Moreover, he surpassed legendary batter Kapil Dev’s record. Ravindra Jadeja scored 175* off 228 deliveries at a strike rate of 76.75. Moreover, Jaddu smashed 17 fours and 3 sixes. Earlier, Kapil Dev held the record of scoring the highest runs (170) batting at number 7.

Ravindra Jadeja becomes Highest scorer

However, India declared the inning at 574. If Jadeja could’ve batted a few more overs, a double-century was very much likely. But India would’ve taken the decision to ensure the match doesn’t end in a draw and they have more time in hand in the next innings. In addition, Jadeja also became the first player ever to bat at 7 or below and be involved in three 100+ partnerships. Moreover, Ravindra Jadeja becomes the fifth Indian batter to be involved in three 100+ partnerships in an inning. Earlier, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Vinod Kambli, and Karun Nair have achieved the feat. First with Pant, then eventually with Ashwin and Shami.

35 years ago Kapil Dev had scored 163 runs against Sri Lanka too. This was to date the highest test score by any Indian, batting 7 or below. Also, this knock became India’s only 3rd batter at 7th position scoring 150+. Along with Kapil Dev and Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant has achieved the feat. This was a flawless inning, which could’ve been only better, had India not declared. Moreover, Ravindra Jadeja is an integral part of the Indian team in all formats. The all-rounder gives a certain kind of balance to the team. Earlier, India lost a test series against South Africa by 2-0. Jadeja missed the series and thus Indian team had struggled with the middle order.

Ravindra Jadeja has played 58 Tests, 168 ODIs, and 58 T20Is. He scored 2370, 2411, and 326 runs in the formats respectively. Also, 233, 188, and 48 wickets were picked by Jadeja in Test, ODI, and T20I respectively.
