Given the current captain, Aaron Finch’s decision to retire, the Australian Cricket Board has named his successor. As the test captain Pat Cummins takes up the role of ODI captaincy. Moreover, Cricket Australia mentioned that Cummins will be supported by a ‘wider’ leadership group rather than a traditional vice-captain.
While there were several candidates to choose from, including the current vice-captain Alex Carey. Moreover, David Warner’s name was also speculated in case his leadership ban was overturned. Additionally, Mitchell Marsh also sounded out well, however, chose to remain in the ranks.
Pat Cummins on Tuesday commented on the same,
“I have thoroughly enjoyed playing under Finchy and have learnt an enormous amount from his leadership. They are significant shoes to fill although we are extremely fortunate to have a one-day squad with a huge amount of experience.”
However, it is unlikely that he will lead every ODI in the upcoming 2024 World Cup, considering the workload. Moreover, he has regularly been rested from the ODI team. Recently, he missed out on the two series Australia played against Zimbabwe and New Zealand.
