Akash Madhwal – The Rise of a Speedstar!

It was entirely Aakash Madhwal’s show at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday. The young fast bowler picked up five wickets and guided MI to victory over LSG in the Eliminator. He only spent five runs in his 3.3 overs at an economy of 1.43. This figure is enough to put him in the elite list comprising big names like Jasprit Bumrah, Anil Kumble, Lasith Malinga and Ishant Sharma. He equalled the record of Anil Kumble by claiming the most economical five-wicket haul in IPL history. Former RCB leg-spinner Anil Kumble scalped 5/5 against Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2009 season.

The Story of Akash Madhwal

According to a report, four years ago Madhwal was playing tennis ball cricket. Till the age of 24, Madhwal hadn’t played with a red ball. But, he caught the attention of then Uttarakhand coach Wasim Jaffer and current coach Manish Jha during the 2019 trials. He is known for his main ability as a yorker bowler. It was the Yorker that he used to full effect on Wednesday and in the game against SRH as well. Madhwal is the first cricketer from the Uttarakhand state team who played in the IPL. Rishabh Pant is a native of Uttarakhand but plays for Delhi in domestic cricket. Madhwal gave up his regular job as a civil engineer to pursue cricket professionally.

Madhwal played 10 first-class games for Uttarakhand and took 12 wickets. He has also played 17 List A games and taken 18 wickets. In T20s, he has now played a total of 29 games and taken 37 wickets.

Madhwal’s IPL journey!

He was first taken in by RCB as a net bowler in 2019. Now Mumbai had also picked up him as a net bowler. But in the absence of main bowlers like Jofra Archer and Jasprit Bumrah, who have been ruled out due to an injury. This season he turned out to be a better one for MI. So far he has played seven matches for Mumbai Indians. With an average of 12.25, he has picked up 13 wickets at an economy of 7.76.
