T20 Cricket is popular for batsmen smashing the balls out of the boundary and making quick runs. The shortest format is known for some exciting, nail-biting results. The ferocious Batsmen on both sides make the matches unpredictable. The performance of some class players is what calls T20 a batsmen’s format. There have also been occasions where a player single-handedly made more runs than an entire team on another occasion could. Let’s look at the 5 highest individual scores in T20 history.
5 Highest Individual Scores In T20 History
5) Brendon McCullum- 158*
McCullum has made a 158 not-out twice in his career. He scored one in IPL 2008, and the other in T20 Blast,2015. He has played for KKR from 2008 to 2010. It was in the inaugural match of the very first IPL that McCullum made this record, which was later broken. He smashed lofty shots against RCB leading his team to a total of 223. He had sent the ball outside the boundary 10 times in a four. While he smashed 13 sixes! He scored 158* on only 73 balls, with a strike rate of 216.44. The second time he scored a 158 not out, it was in even fewer balls. The Warwickshire batsman had hit it in only 64 balls against Derbyshire, in July 2015. He had hit 13 fours and 11 sixes at a strike rate of 256.87.
4) Adam Lyth-161
The English player scored the 4th highest individual score in T20 history. This massive score came in T20 Blast against Northamptonshire. The Yorkshire player in 2017 had hit a humongous 161 off only 73 deliveries. Adam had a strike rate of 220.54 while he had smashed the ball outside the boundary 27 times in all. 3) Hazaratullah Zazai & H Masakadza- 162*
There’s a tie for third place. Afghanistan’s Zazai and Zimbabwe’s Hamilton Masakadza have both scored a 162 in the 20-overs format.
Mountaineers’ player Hamilton Masakadza scored a 162* in a Domestic Twenty20 Competition against the team Eagles. He scored 162* off only 71 balls, in the year 2016. He had a high Strike rate of 228.16, hitting 14 fours and 11 sixes. Masakadza led his team to a total of 242, and eventually to a win.
Zazai, the young Afghani batsman scored a 162 not-out against Ireland in February 2019. It is the second-highest individual score in an International T20 match, and the highest for his country. The unbeaten 162 came off only 62 deliveries. He had a high strike rate of 261.29. Hazaratullah Zazai had smashed 11 fours and 16 sixes in all. He along with Usman Ghani could manage a 278 on board. Afghanistan won the match, Zazai being the Man of the Match.
2) Aaron Finch- 172
Finch scored a massive 172 against Zimbabwe in 2018. Because of Finch’s great innings, Australia could win the match from a huge margin of 100 runs. He scored 172 runs off only 76 balls. He definitely would’ve scored a couple more runs, had he not made a blunder in the form of hit-wicket. Aaron Finch smashed a total of 16 fours and 10 sixes at a strike rate of 226.31. Had he played 2 more balls he would’ve made a record of highest individual score. On the day it even seemed possible. However, he fell 3 runs short of the record. He credited the pitch and a few other things that went his way for the high score.

1) Chris Gayle-175*
The Gail-storm as he is popularly known must top this list. It was on April 23rd, 2013 that he had hit the fastest century in IPL history. Gayle played for Royal Challengers Bangalore and terrified Pune Warriors with his batting. Pune Warriors India knew nothing that could stop him. Christopher Gayle broke McCullum’s record of 158. To make a massive 175 off only 66 balls, there must be a lot of boundaries. Gayle had hit a total of 13 fours and 17 sixes at a strike rate of 265.15. This implies, 154 of 175 runs were only from boundaries. How incredible is that!
The iconic innings will never be forgotten in IPL history. AB De Villiers and Dilshan helped Gayle to have 263 runs on board. Making it the highest team total in IPL history. Let’s see if Gayle’s record can ever be broken. However, it seems impossible for anyone to make an individual score of 175 in the 20-overs format.
