County Championship: Cheteshwar Pujara scores Double-Century on Sussex debut

In the first innings, Cheteshwar Pujara was dismissed for six off 15 deliveries.

Pujara’s performance in Tests accompanied by his unmatched temperament makes him a perfect Test player. He was not picked by any franchise in IPL 2022 therefore he is playing in the County Cricket Championship. This is not the first time he is playing for England County Cricket. But he is playing his debut match for Sussex who picked him as an overseas batter. The Tom Daines-led side has not had a great first match. As a result, coach Ian Salisbury has named India’s Cheteshwar Pujara and Pakistan’s keeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan in the playing XI for their second match. Cheteshwar Pujara scores Double-Century in his debut match for Sussex.

Pujara has been struggling to perform for India earlier. He was even dropped off the team against South Africa after consistent poor performances. The County Championships gave him a good chance to show his batting abilities. Cheteshwar Pujara made the best use of the chance to redeem himself. Derbyshire had an impressive first inning, declaring at 505. However, in the first innings, Pujara could only score 6 off 15 balls. Scoring 174, Sussex was bowled out. Derbyshire had asked for a follow-on. Skipper Tom Haines and Pujara built a strong partnership of 351. This helped draw a match that was almost into Derbyshire’s hands.

Pujara smashed an unbeaten 201 off 387 deliveries. Moreover, he smashed the ball to the fence down the ground a total of 23 times. Apart from his great performance, the 351-run partnership that he established with Haines is impressive. Tom Haines has scored 243 off 491. The ability to hold wickets is a tough task. Sussex stood 513/3 at 176.1 overs when the match result was declared. After losing their first, Sussex’s second game ended in a draw.
