Hobart Stadium History

The stadium was constructed in 1913 and was opened in 1914 but had no cricket association. Tasmania was admitted to the Sheffield Shield in 1977, and the TCA devised a plan to relocate from its current location at the TCA Ground on the Domain to a new oval. KGV Oval and North Hobart Oval were passed over in favour of Bellerive Oval. The old TCA Ground scoreboard was moved there, new grandstands, training nets, a hill, a new field, and the masterpiece—the three-level Members’ Pavilion—were built for a cost of $2,200,000.

Under TCA Chairman Denis Rogers, the decision was made in 1987 in time for the first international game, which took place on January 12, 1988, in front of a crowd of 6,500. The teams playing were Sri Lanka and New Zealand. From December 16 to 20, 1989, Australia and Sri Lanka played the first Test match in Tasmania at Bellerive. The new digital scoreboard and Northern Stand were constructed shortly after that. In October 2011, the oval became Australia’s first premier cricket venue to sign a naming-rights sponsor.

Bellerive Oval Boundary Length

One of the smallest international cricket stadiums in terms of ground size is the Bellerive Oval, Hobart stadium in Australia. The square boundary measures 56 metres in length and the straight boundary 60 metres. Because of this, it is challenging for batsmen to score runs, and boundaries are frequently missed.
