“He decided that mujhe ab nahi karni hai captaincy”, BCCI official opens up on Kohli’s call to step down as skipper

Kohli will be seen in action in the Asia Cup starting later this month.

Virat Kohli‘s abrupt stepping down after the T20 World Cup last year came as an utter shock to the fans. This followed his sacking as an ODI skipper ahead of the South Africa tour in December 2021. These events propelled BCCI to go ahead with the less popular split captaincy with Rohit Sharma as a limited-overs skipper and Virat Kohli helming the red ball captaincy. However, Virat put all the speculations to rest as he resigned from the Test captaincy following the 2-1 series loss to South Africa in January this year.

Virat Kohli was anticipated to resume his dominant form with the bat now that he didn’t have the responsibility of serving as captain, but the right-hander is currently going through an extended slump, and concerns are being raised over his position on the Indian squad.

“Kohli’s Contribution to Indian cricket is unparalleled”- BCCI treasurer

Arun Dhumal, the BCCI treasurer, has refuted the idea that the captaincy controversy. And that it was handled poorly by the organisation and had a negative effect on Kohli’s batting. Dhumal further underlined that the decision to select the senior batter is totally up to the selectors.

“See… as far as Virat is concerned, he is not a simple player. He is a great and his contribution to Indian cricket is unparalleled. It is outstanding. So, such conversations (board is trying to sideline Kohli) keep taking place in the media and it does not affect us. We want that he returns to form soon, and as far as team selection is concerned, we leave it to selectors. It is their call as to how they want to go about it,”

Dhumal told veteran sports journalist Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel.

“As far as the issue of captaincy is concerned, it was his call. He decided that mujhe ab nahi karni hai captaincy (that I don’t want to captain). It is possible that someone feels it’s best to do it after the World Cup but that is their point of view. But he wanted to quit, and it was purely his decision. And we respected it. See, he has contributed so much to Indian cricket that everyone in the cricket board respects him. We would like to see Virat in action on the ground,”

He Added.

The Indian team’s current white-ball tour of the West Indies has been without Virat Kohli. Kohli was granted rest on his request. However, He’s most likely going to play again at the Asia Cup in 2022. The tournament is scheduled to take place in the UAE from August 27 to September 11
