Wimbledon Trims Men’s Doubles To Three Sets

The All England Club stated on Wednesday that Wimbledon will reduce men’s doubles matches from best-of-five sets to best-of-three from the current championships. It had previously been argued that the traditional five-set format discouraged more singles experts from playing doubles. Wimbledon was the only grand slam event to feature five-set doubles matches. But will now follow the Australian Open, French Open, and US Open in adopting this format. “The decision was made following a wide-ranging consultation and the change brings Wimbledon into line with the other grand slams which stage the gentlemen’s doubles in a best-of-three format,”

THE AELTC SAID IN A STATEMENT.

The Format Has Been Previously Criticised

This update will provide the referee’s office with greater certainty when scheduling matches during the event and we hope it will encourage even more players to enter doubles at Wimbledon as a result. While All other formats at Wimbledon will remain the same.

The modification will be in place starting with the championships this year, which begin on July 3. The men’s doubles five-set format at Wimbledon has received criticism in the past; the adjustment, which will result in less time spent on the court, might entice more players to participate in the competition.

The 2022 men’s singles finalist Nick Kyrgios criticised the format the previous year before quitting his doubles campaign with Thanasi Kokkinakis to concentrate on singles. The Australian even branded it the “stupidest thing ever”.
