Thirteenth seed Marin Cilic will compete against compatriot Borna Coric in the first round of the Canadian Open on Tuesday.
The seasoned Croat is having a respectable season. At the Adelaide International 1 and the Adelaide International 2, he reached back-to-back semifinals to start the year. He continued on and made it to the fourth round of the Australian Open, when Felix Auger-Aliassime ended his run. The Croatian player at the Qatar Open advanced to the quarterfinals before posting a string of average performances. By making it to his first French Open semifinals in 2022, Cilic regained his footing and became just the sixth active player to go to the semifinals of all four Grand Slam tournaments. Casper Ruud finally won in four sets, defeating him.
Borna Coric, meanwhile, has been significantly sidelined. In 2021, the 25-year-old Croatian suffered shoulder surgery, which forced him to miss a whole season. His standing declined, and his comeback did not provide the desired outcomes. This year, Coric has alternated between playing on the ATP circuit and the Challenger tour. The former No. 12 in the world succeeded in taking the Parma Challenger. After that, he advanced to the German Open quarterfinals. Coric has qualified for the main draw of the Canadian Open using a protected ranking.

Marin Cilic vs Borna Coric Prediction
Cilic is an aggressive baseliner who relies on his efficient serve to win free points. He interchangeably hits a flat forehand or plays it with topspin. Hitting big shots when out of position has proved to be the Grand Slam winner’s undoing in the past. Coric, on the other hand, is a defensive baseliner. He is consistent with his shots and will try to put every ball back in to play.
Given his exceptional record against his fellow Croatian, it will be Cilic’s match to win.
Prediction: Cilic to win in straight sets.
