Canadian youngster Denis Shapovalov made headlines after defeating King of Clay Rafael Nadal in Round 16 of the Madrid Open. Shapavalov had a good last year as he reached the Semi-Finals stage of Wimbledon to get defeated by current World Number 1 Novak Djokovic. Here are some Interesting Facts about Denis Shapovalov.

(1) Shapovalov has Russian heritage

This Canadian has both Ukrainian and Russian heritage from his parent’s side. His mother is a Ukrainian Jew and his dad is a Russian Orthodox. Shapavalov was born in Israel and his parents moved to Canada when he was one year old. But Shapovalov plays for Canada as he was brought up there.

(2) Shapavalov’s mom was his first coach

Shapovalov’s mother was the first person to introduce him to the world of tennis. She was a part of the Soviet national tennis team. But she moved to Israel when SOivet Union collapsed and worked as a tennis coach there before eventually moving to Canada and opening a tennis academy. She might not be Shapovalov’s coach now, but she still accompanies her son to all the matches.

(3) Roger Federer inspired Shapovalov to play tennis

Roger Federer was a huge inspiration for Shpovalov while growing up. And during their first interaction in Basil, Federer was kind enough to talk with Shapovalov for 10 minutes and welcomed him to the city.

(4) 2019 is a year not to forget for Denis

2019 was the year for him as he won Stockholm Open by defeating Filip Krajinović in straight sets, which was his first major title. Even though he made his first Masters 1000 final appearance in 2019. He ended up losing that title to Novak Djokovic in straight sets. He finished the season at a career-high ranking of number 15.

(5) Shapovalov is also a musician

Shapovalov started honing his music skills during the COVID 19 pandemic and began writing lyrics and producing songs from his own in-home studio in the Bahamas. He took inspiration from Drake, G-Eazy and Eminem. He even released his first rap single, Night Train, and then released another French-English song, Drip along with French tennis player Corentin Moutet.
