Andy Murray Pledges $630,000 for Ukrainian Humanitarian Relief

Andy Murray, a former world number one, announced on Thursday that he has raised $630,000 for war-torn Ukraine by keeping his promise to give his whole season’s winnings. Three-time major champion Murray made the decision in February to give his 2022 on-court earnings to UNICEF programmes in Ukraine in response to the Russian invasion.

The 35-year-old has been named recipient of the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award in recognition of his gesture.

“When Russia invaded Ukraine everyone was very worried about what it would mean. When all the images on the news showing what was happening to families began pouring in, it was devastating,”

Murray wrote in an essay posted on atptour.com.

2022, so memorable for the English player

“Houses were bombed and families were displaced. Young children were affected by this, with many injured and in some cases dying. I wasn’t sure what I could do to help. Shortly after I decided that from Indian Wells onwards, I would donate my prize money for the rest of the season to UNICEF’s humanitarian response – the final total was just over $630,000.”

Murray said in discomfort

This year, Wimbledon prohibited players from Russia and its ally Belarus. They are still permitted to compete in ATP and WTA events, just not under their national flags.

Unfortunately, 2022 hasn’t been a great run so far for the British player. As the reigning champion Emma Raducanu defeated in the first round, with Andy Murray played knocked out.

Despite taking down Francisco Cerundolo and Emilio Nava earlier on in the tournament, the Scottish star met his match against Matteo Berrettini in the early hours of the morning. Berrettini eliminated him from the tournament.
