Jimmy Garoppolo shocked many by opting to sign a contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers through the 2022 season on Monday rather than, as anticipated, demanding a trade. Garoppolo told reporters on Thursday that he is content to remain in the Bay Area for another year.
Jimmy Garoppolo: Contract Extended with 49ers
Garoppolo consented to a reworked one-year contract with no-trade and no-tag provisions, which will make him a free agent in 2024. Trey Lance, a second-year quarterback who was selected San Francisco’s starter earlier this offseason, will use him as his backup for the duration of this season.

Jimmy Garoppolo: “I’m happy where I’m at”
When asked if he spoke with Lance before deciding to stay on the team, Jimmy Garoppolo replied that he had received assurances from Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch that the rookie was fine with having the seasoned player ahead of him on the depth chart. Jimmy Garoppolo said that,
“I think things worked out for the best. It was a lot of ups and downs, rocky roads here and there, but I think throughout the whole thing, me, I’m happy with where I’m at, happy to be with the Niners. I think the Niners are happy to have me back. I think things are working out pretty well.”
When asked about Jimmy’s relationship with Trey Lance, he said,
“Me and Trey, honestly, I know a lot of stuff gets made in the media and s–t like that, but we have a good relationship. So everyone can say what they want and everything, but what we went through last year is very similar to this situation, so it’s not like we haven’t done it before.”

Jimmy Incharge of his own fate in 2024
Despite the fact that Jimmy Garoppolo called it “strange” to be in a limbo amid trade speculations, he never directly asked to be traded away from the team. The 30-year-old acknowledged that pushing for a move simply wasn’t in his character.
In addition, Garoppolo said that despite an interesting offseason in NFL that saw a lot of top players moved, he wasn’t an ideal match with any other teams. What was most enticing to him was the idea of being in charge of his own fate in 2024.
