Williams Racing has officially appointed James Vowles as their Team Principal ahead of the 2024 Formula 1 season. Vowles replaces the out-going Jost Capito as Williams’ new Team Principal.
An Impressive Résumé
James Vowles brings a lot of experience to the Williams garage. He has been in Formula 1 for over two decades. He was formerly the Chief Strategist over at Mercedes. The British engineer and strategist has provided his services to Mercedes since 2010 and was a key player in their title-winning seasons. His resume doesn’t end there. Furthermore, Vowles worked as race-strategist with Jenson Button during Button and Brawn GP’s championship-winning season in 2009. The two will now be re-united at Williams as Jenson Button is currently the Williams Brand Ambassador.
James Vowles Reacts To The Move To Williams
Vowles said, “I cannot wait to start with Williams Racing. It’s an honour to join a team with such an incredibly rich heritage. The team is an icon of our sport, one I greatly respect, and I am very much looking forward to the challenge.”

Toto Wolff and Mercedes Reaction
Mercedes had to bid a hard goodbye to one of their foundational pillars. They released an official statement which disclosed that James Vowles has been released from his Mercedes contract to join Williams Racing as Team Principal. Toto stated, “James has been a highly valued member of our team in his role as Motorsport Strategy Director, playing an integral part in our success in recent years. Having worked with him since I first joined the team in 2013, I know how diligent, capable and talented he is and have taken great satisfaction from watching James develop and grow over the past decade.”
“While we are naturally sad to be saying goodbye to such a capable member of the team, I have no doubts whatsoever that he has all the necessary skills to become a fantastic Team Principal in Formula One. We wish him every success and are delighted that he will take this next step in his career with Williams, a strong technical partner of ours and one that has a place close to my own heart,” Toto added. A Tough Task Ahead
William Racing was stuck at last place in the Constructor’s Championship. The team of Alex Albon and Nicholas Latifi could only manage eight points over the course of the season. American driver Logan Sargeant is set to replace Latifi moving forward. It will be interesting to see how Vowles blends into the Williams dynamic going forward.
