Haaland Overtakes Shearer and Cole, Obliterates the Premier League Scoring Record

Previously Newcastle's Alan Shearer and United's Andy Cole shared the record scoring 34 each.

Erling Braut Haaland bags his 35th goal as City runs through West Ham with a 3-0 scoreline. It was not just a victory night for City but a celebratory one as Haaland creates a new record. Previously Newcastle’s Alan Shearer and United’s Andy Cole shared the record scoring 34 each. But that feat was achieved in a 42-match season. Haaland breaks the record with 5 matches to spare. Previously he broke the record of Mo Salah as the top scorer of a 38-match PL season.

Pep had a small chat with BBC Sport, “Incredible, He’s just 22 – and still has five games left. How many games I made the substitution after a hat-trick in 60 minutes, maybe he’d have scored more. But maybe he’d have got injured. He’s special. Congratulations to him.

“We expected him to score goals but to break Cole and Shearer records… I’m pretty sure what he wants is to win the Premier League. We have one game in hand but still just one point in front. We have to keep going and recover well.”

“He’s a unique person and he’s so special. He deserved the Guard of honor because it’s an incredible milestone. Another day he might break his own record. He’s scored a lot of goals!”

City are now standing top of the Premier League with 1 point advantage over Arsenal and a match in hand.

“I said after Arsenal (last week) when everybody said it’s over, I said it was not over in my press conference,” Guardiola said of the 4-1 win last midweek.

“Yesterday Arsenal proved it. They will not give up. I know quite well Mikel (Arteta), how competitive he is and I know a few players.

“Arsenal is one of the historical teams and they will be there. I said to the players.”

About the record Pep added that, “Of course this record will be broken sooner or later, maybe by him in the future or maybe another one but they’ll have to score a lot of goals because he scored a lot.

“Of course (we planned the guard of honour). We thought about that and in football when there is a special occasion, we have to show how special it is.

“Today it was with Erling. Another one, another day will happen but of course to score and overcome the position of Andy Cole and Alan Shearer – incredible, top, top strikers – is special.”
