The Netherlands has been the real deal in the whole of FIFA history. This will be the 11th time they will make their appearance in the FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar. They have been very consistent for a long time, and indeed 1934 and 1938 were when everyone accepted the Netherlands as a strong team.
In 1974 for the first time, they made it to the final and the journey was undoubtedly amazing as they defeated some strong teams who were the best at that time. In Round 1 they finished the table by winning 2 matches out of 3 and qualified for Round 2 where they defeated Argentina by 4-0, East Germany 0-2, and Brazil by 2-0, and at last they made it to the final but unfortunately they lost to West Germany by 2-1.
Again in 1978, they had the same dream and the same energy and there is no doubt that everyone thought this time Netherlands gonna lift that trophy out of nowhere they did make it to the finals after clearing their Round 1 and Round 2 but in the final, it was Argentina and the match ended up as 3-1 and Argentina lifted their first World Cup trophy.
The journey continued and in 1990 they got eliminated in the round of 16. In 1994 they were close to the finals but got defeated by Brazil in Quarter Final. Eight years later, it was again in The Round of 16 games and lost the match against Portugal. In 2010, It was the time when the Netherlands again made it to the finals. However, the curse of losing big matches followed them and Spain lifted the trophy. The last appearance of the Netherlands was the 2014 edition of the World Cup and again Argentina was the one who crushed Netherlands’ dream by winning the penalties in Semi-Final and they placed third by defeating Brazil. Subsequently, In Russia, The Dutch failed to qualify and had to watch the games from home.
Can Netherlands finally get rid of the big game curse? After all, they have a great team that includes Frenkie de Jong, Memphis Depay, Virgil van Dijk and also a great depth.
