Joe Root steps down as England Test captain

Joe Root has played 117 Tests and scored 9889 runs in his decade-long international career.

The most successful Test captain of England, Joe Root has decided to step down. In February 2017, Root has taken the charge of the Test team as Alastair Cook resigned. On his very first Test as a captain, Root has scored a century. He has led England in most Test matches [64]. Therefore, he has overseen most Test wins [27] and losses [26] too. However, his contributions to the national side have been immense. He has been publicly advised to step down as the England skipper by former national players. Out of the Three Lions’ past 17 Tests, only one has ended in a win and public opinion on Joe Root’s leadership has turned.

Because of the lost faith, returning from the Caribbean tour, root has taken the decision. Moreover, he mentions having consulted his family and close friend before taking the decision. Also, Joe Root feels that ‘the timing is right’.

When a team is not in its best form, winning matches, it gets difficult for the players to deal with it. However, the captain is the one most affected. Joe Root has also mentioned how this has taken a toll on his mental well-being. He also talks about how difficult it was for him to take this decision.

“After returning from the Caribbean tour and having time to reflect, I have decided to step down as England Men’s Test Captain. It has been the most challenging decision I have had to make in my career but having discussed this with my family and those closest to me; I know the timing is right. I am immensely proud to have captained my country and will look back on the past five years with enormous pride. It has been an honour to have done the job and to have been a custodian of what is the pinnacle of English cricket. I have loved leading my country, but recently it’s hit home how much of a toll it has taken on me and the impact it has had on me away from the game.”

Moreover, Root mentions how proud he is for getting to not just represent but also lead England. Furthermore, he expressed his deep gratitude to his family for being his strength. On the professional front, he thanked coaches and support staff to have been instrumental in his tenure as a captain.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank my family, Carrie, Alfred and Bella, who have lived it all with me and been incredible pillars of love and support throughout. All of the players, coaches and support staff that have helped me during my tenure. It has been a great privilege to have been with them on this journey. I would also like to thank all the England supporters for their unwavering support. We are lucky to have the best fans in the world, and wherever we play, that positivity is something we always cherish and admire, which is a huge drive for all of us out there.
