Former England skipper Joe Root became the first English batter to reach 17,000 runs in international cricket on Sunday. Root accomplished this milestone during the first Test match against New Zealand, where he scored a superb century to help his team take a 1-0 lead over the visitors. In 170 balls, Root scored 115* runs. Joe Root scored 10,000 runs in Test cricket on Sunday, becoming the second Englishman and the 14th player in history to do so.
During the first Test between England and New Zealand at Lord’s, Root reached this milestone. The Roots reached this milestone thanks to a flick off Tim Southee’s delivery in the 77th over of the innings. He also reached his 26th Test century with this.
Alastair Cook, a former England captain, is the only other Englishman to have scored 10,000 runs or more. He has a total of 12,472 points in 161 tests, with a 45.35 average. In the longest version of the game, he also scored 33 centuries and 57 half-centuries.

Roots joins the prestigious >10k test runs club
With his latest knock Root has entered an exclusive club of players who have scored 10,000 runs or more in the game’s longest format. Sachin Tendulkar (15,921), Ricky Ponting (13,378), Jacques Kallis (13,289), Rahul Dravid (13,288), and Alastair Cook are at the top of the list (12,472).
In terms of the contest, England triumphed by five wickets, chasing down a 277-run total. In 78.5 overs, England was reduced to 279/5. Root’s unbeaten 115* helped the squad to victory.
