Axar Patel Has A Chance To Equal 133-year-old Record In Bengaluru Test if he gets included in next test against Srilanka. The day and night Test match will give Rohit Sharma’s boys a chance to end the 2-match series with a clean sweep after a comprehensive win in the First Test at Mohali earlier this month. If picked, Axar will have a chance to try and equal a 133-year-old record in Test cricket which was long set in 1880.

Axar made a stamping debut in Test cricket last year, as he bowled some real twisters and goggles to which English batters didn’t know how to react. This helped India bounce back in the home series ultimately picking 27 wickets in the series. Patel then played against New Zealand and picked up a fifer in the first Test in Kanpur. This puts Axar as an eligible contender to become the fastest bowler to get 50 dismissals in Test cricket history. But in Axar’s next three innings he picked only 4 wickets. Now that means Patel has got 36 wickets in his name after 5 Test matches.
Fastest 50 wickets record and Axar’s Chances
The record of the fastest 50 wickets in Test cricket was achieved by Australian medium pacer Charles Turner long back in 1880. Charles had taken 6 Test matches to reach the milestone. Closest to reach that milestone was South Africa’s Vernon Philander who had come close to equalling or breaking the record but he reached the 50-wicket mark in his 7th Test.
So now Axar Patel needs to get 14 wickets in his next Test match to equal the record to which a question still remains whether he’ll be part of the squad or not. India played Jayant Yadav as the third spinner in the first Test along with Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, but Axar’s availability could mean he gets a go in this match. And even if Axar gets to play, he will face stiff competition from Ashwin and Jadeja, who are known for having a lion’s share of dismissals in home conditions.
But will the Bangalore test call be of worth to Axar, who is looking to cement his place in the Indian test squad as a third spinner that only future will tell.
