ICC Women’s World Cup 2022: Veteran Indian pacer, Jhulan Goswami, becomes the joint highest wicket-taker in Women’s WC history.

Veteran Indian pacer, Jhulan Goswami, grabbed her 39th wicket in the 50-over Women’s World Cup today. Though the Indian team faced defeat at the hands of New Zealand, the pacer registered her name in the records book. With 39 wickets, Jhulan Goswami becomes the joint-highest wicket-taker in women’s WC history. White Ferns’ wicket-keeper, Katey Martin, became her world record-equalling wicket. Goswami has now scalped the same number of wickets as those of Lyn Fullston.

Lyn Fullston is a former Australian cricketer who took 39 wickets in the two Women’s World Cups between 1982 and 1988. Fullston ended as the highest wicket-taker in back-to-back World Cups with 23 and 16 wickets in 1982 and 1988 respectively. Both the tournaments were won by the Australian team and Fullston played the most crucial role in the two events.

Goswami cleaned up Katey Martin on the first ball of the 50th over in first innings to achieve the feat. The veteran Indian fast-bowler played her first WC in 2005 and the event in 2022 turns out to be her 5th World Cup. Though she has been a part of two WC finals, she has never won the trophy for her country. In the last edition of the tournament in 2017, India reached the finals but lost the trophy to the hosts, England.

India won the first match of this edition against Pakistan by a massive margin of 107 runs. However, the team could not replicate their performance against New Zealand as the White Ferns beat India by 62 runs to climb to the second position in the points table. Satterthwaite(75 runs) and Tahuhu(3/17) led the hosts to a comfortable victory over the women in blue. India will play their next match against the West Indies Women on March 12. WIW are in a great form as they have won back-to-back matches, defeating New Zealand Women and England Women. The onus for Indian women will be on the batters. Runs from Smriti Mandhana and Mithali Raj will be crucial.
