Adelaide: Adelaide Strikers defeated Sydney Sixers in their first match of the season. The three-time champions Sixers fell short of 51 runs to provide Strikers an edge in the tournament
Strikers chose to bat first after captain Peter Siddle won the toss. Batting first, Matt Short and Chris Lynn took up the helm after Jake Weatherald departed in the first over. Matt Short and Lynn kept a steady partnership of 95 runs. However, Lynn fell to an Ishraqulhaq delivery. Nevertheless, English player Adam Hose took up charge. He quickfired 40 runs from 22 deliveries at a massive strike rate of 181.22.
Matt Short scored 84 off 53 to top score the innings. Big Bash’s leading wicket-taker Sean Abbott added three more wickets to his existing tally. The Strikers managed a score of 184/6, setting a target of 185 for the defending runners-up.
Chasing a good target, Henry Thronton thwarted the Sixers’ opening by taking Kurtis Patterson’s and James Vince’s key wickets. After the initial dismay, the Sixers shot up but couldn’t keep up. The constant wickets threatened the team. Rashid Khan and Henry Thronton made sure of that by taking out three and four wickets each. The Strikers batters Josh Philippe, captain Henriquez, and Jordan Silk tried in building up but failed. At last, The Sixers ended up with their magically boring innings at 133, short of 51 runs.
The opening Batter of Adelaide Strikers, Matt Short was adjudged Man of the Match for his batting classics. The 27-year-old scored 84 runs off 53 balls including 13 boundaries. The innings also marked him as the first batter to go past 50 in this BBL Tournament. In addition, he bowled two overs at an economy rate of 6.5 without any wickets.
The victory pushed Strikers to the helm of the table above the other Sydney team – Thunders. The Sixers will play their major rivals Perth Scorchers in their next game. The Strikers will go up against the Sydney Thunders on Friday.
