The Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) is the autonomous body that governs cricket in India. BCCI requests Supreme Court to urgently hear plea to allow amendment of the Board’s constitution. The amendments that the board is seeking includes making possible an extension in the tenure of President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah. In addition, the board is also seeking some other amendments.
The constitution of BCCI was framed by a committee headed by ex-CJI RM Lodha. Moreover, Rule 6.4 talks about the tenure ad number of terms of office-holder. It states “An office bearer who has held any post for two consecutive terms either in a state association or in the BCCI (or a combination of both) shall not be eligible to contest any further election without completing a cooling off period of three years.”

BCCI lawyer PS Patwalia appeared before a bench constituting CJI NV Ramana and Justice Krishna Murari. He sought listing for the amendments request as the case has been hanging since May 2020. Moreover, the judge who was earlier looking in the matter has now retired so the need for alloting a new judge for the case. The CJI has responded t his request saying “We will consider if it can be listed next week.”
“The application was filed two years ago and it came up in April (last year) where a direction was passed to list it after two weeks. The amendments are still in the pipeline and remain pending till date.”

Another amendment proposed is in Rule 6.5. It talks about disqualifying a BCCI office bearer upon conviction under a punishable offense. In addition, there are also efforts to make amendments that would allow BCCI Secretary to exercise some power in several cricketing and non-cricketing matters.
