PV Sindhu clinches Singapore Open title, defeats China’s Wang Zhi Yi in women’s singles

Previously, Saina Nehwal was the only Indian woman to win the women's singles title at the Singapore Open 2022.

India’s Olympic medallist star shuttler, PV Sindhu won another important tournament for the country. PV Sindhu defeated China’s Wang Zhi Yi in the women’s singles to win the Singapore Open title, 2022. The thrilling final was nowhere less than a roller-coaster. Still, Sindhu finished on the winning side. The Asian Champion was defeated 21-9, 11-21, 21-15 by an exceptional performance by the Indian star player.

Moreover, this is her third title of the year. She had won Syed Modi International and the Swiss Open. However, this is the first Super 500 title. Since the previous 2 were Super 300 titles. This makes India hopeful as the Commonwealth Games are all set to begin later this month in Birmingham. With the kind of touch she has been looking in, India is glad that she will be leading the Indian charge.

“Getting this title means a lot, this would give me a lot of confidence, this will take me to another level. The whole week, a couple of matches were in three games, some were in two. But each match was important from the start. Now it’s time to relax a bit and focus on the Commonwealth Games. This is just the start, but it’ll give me a lot of confidence.”

This win flooded Twitter with congratulatory messages for Sindhu. The national hero added another medal to her illustrious cabinet. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi also posted a proud note for her. It said “I congratulate @Pvsindhu1 on winning her first ever Singapore Open title. She has yet again demonstrated her exceptional sporting talent and achieved success. It is a proud moment for the country and will also give inspiration to upcoming players.”

The Commonwealth Games 2022 will begin on July 28th. india’s badminton contingent looks strong ahead of the tournament with this sensational victory.
