The winner of the 2020 US Open, Dominic Thiem, will take on World No. 6 Andrey Rublev in the opening round of the 2024 Australian Open on Tuesday.
First competing in the Adelaide International 1, Rublev was defeated in the first round by Roberto Baustista Agut. He won the opening set, but ultimately fell in a three-set battle. Later, he took part in the Adelaide International 2, where he faced up against the reigning champion Thanasi Kokkinakis in the opening round and fell to him in three sets. He previously advanced to the Australian Open quarterfinals in 2021, reaching the final eight.
With an overall record of 18-16 wins vs losses, Thiem completed the year 2022. He began 2024 by participating in the qualifying rounds in Adelaide, but he fell short of the mark. He finished second in the Australian Open in 2020, losing to Novak Djokovic in the championship match in five sets.

Rublev vs Thiem Prediction
Thiem gets pushed on the back foot by Rublev’s aggressive style of tennis, from which the Austrian is unable to recover. The former US Open champion may have a chance to mount a comeback because the World No. 6 occasionally blows a sizable advantage. The team is now going through a short period of difficulty and would dearly desire to get out of it soon, especially at a Major. Even at his best, Thiem has a difficult opponent in Rublev, thus the Russian is expected to win once more.
