PCB Chairman announces first-ever Pakistan Junior League

Ramiz Raza, chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board recently proposed a 4-nation annual T20 series. However, ICC didn't show much interest in the series.

Pakistan is launching an age-group-based league for young players. PCB announces the first-ever Pakistan Junior League which is slated to be held in October this year. The proposed T20 league will feature five teams. However, to avoid clashes with the existing Pakistan Super League. PJL will have hosts cities other than the ones existing in PSL. Although, PSL franchises have the right to acquire a PJL franchise. Moreover, the players in the age group 15-19 will feature in the league. Obtaining lucrative sponsors and broadcasters is the major task now. However, the board believes they’ll attract enormous sponsors.

Currently, the Under 19 players in Pakistan have a decent exposure in One-day matches. However, the Pakistan Junior League will give a great learning environment in the shortest format. The cricket board aims to rope some of the legendary Pak cricketers as coaches and mentors.

Ramiz Raja shared his excitement about the Junior League. He shares they’ve been working on the idea for quite some time now. Moreover, the event is planned to be organized in October 2022. The Junior League will have a PSL-like format, it will be a city-based league. In addition to Pakistani youngsters, international cricketers would also get a platform.

“The PCB will create an environment of brilliance with legends and icons of the game sitting in player dug-outs in the roles of mentors and coaches, and broadcast coverage from the top draw. A young apprentice can be molded into a genius with right environment, which we intend to create in this format.”

Moreover, Raja talked about the PCB Junior Pathways program under which 100 youngsters have received contracts. They’ll also get coaching, education, and a monthly stipend of PKR 30,000.

“Initiatives like the PJL are all about creating opportunities for cricketers, identifying the talent, nurturing them into world-class players, and closing the gap between domestic and international cricket.”
