The past several months have been difficult for Shapovalov. Wolf’s lack of prior ATP tour experience, though, gives the Canadian a strong chance to prevail.
Both in terms of serve and return performance versus Daniel in the first round, Wolf did quite well. The American has frequently shown promise, but hasn’t been able to maintain the momentum necessary for a genuine breakout run. He challenged Stefanos Tsitsipas in Miami, but he ultimately fell short in three sets.
Since Shapovalov is not at his best right now, the outcome might go Wolf’s way if he can continually apply pressure. On the other hand, the Canadian still has a long way to go before he can perform at his previous level. He has all the resources necessary to be a successful player, but recently he hasn’t used them well.
