The NHL Outfit Chicago Blackhawks reported that they will not be wearing the Pride-themed Warm-up jackets against Vancouver Canucks before Sunday’s Pride Night. The reason cited behind the decision is security concerns involving a Russian law. The law suggests restrictions on activities seen as promoting LGBTQIA+ rights in the country.
According to a person who spoke to the AP, the NHL organization made the choice after consulting with security officials inside and outside the team. In December, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed legislation that considerably broadens the country’s existing prohibitions on actions deemed to advance LGBTQIA+ rights. Chicago Defenseman Nikita Zaitsev and other players may have relatives there or other ties to the nation.

Prior to this season, the Blackhawks had worn Pride warmup shirts as well as other themed warmup jerseys. The Chicago Blackhawks’ decision comes after Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov and San Jose Sharks goaltender James Reimer declined to participate in warmups while wearing Pride-themed jerseys. After previously publicizing that plan, the New York Rangers decided not to wear Pride jerseys or use Pride stick tape as part of their Pride Night in January.
Chicago won’t be wearing Pride warmup jerseys this season. However, the team has scheduled a number of events in conjunction with the game on Sunday. Before the game and during the interval, DJs from the LGBTQIA+ community will spin music. The Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus is also scheduled to perform. There are plans for highlighting a few local companies with connections to the LGBTQIA+ community.
