The Dallas Stars have acquired veteran defenseman Chris Tanev from the Calgary Flames in a three-team trade that also involved the New Jersey Devils.
Additionally, they also the recieved the rights to University of Massachusetts prospect goaltender Cole Brady.

The Flames sent Tanev, along with a conditional third-round pick in 2026, to the Devils. The Devils then traded Tanev to the Stars for a fourth-round pick in 2026.
The Flames received prospect defenseman Artem Grushnikov and a second-round pick in 2024 from the Stars. The conditional third-round pick to the Flames will only go to Calgary if the Stars make the Stanley Cup Final in 2024.
Tanev is a 34-year-old defenseman who has played for the Vancouver Canucks and the Winnipeg Jets in his career. He is a two-time Stanley Cup finalist, having lost to the Boston Bruins in 2011 and the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020. He was also part of the 2016 IIHF World Championship Winning Squad.
The Stars are hoping that Tanev will provide some much-needed experience and leadership to their blue line. He is a physical defenseman who is good at blocking shots and killing penalties.
The Flames are rebuilding their team and are looking to add young prospects to their system. Grushnikov is a 19-year-old defenseman who was drafted by the Stars in the second round of the 2022 NHL Draft.
The Stars are leading atop the Central Division with 79 points. The Flames and Devils are playoff contenders, but will need to champion through a tough race.
