Indian Captains who have scored centuries in the ODI World Cup

Only three Indian captains have hit a century in the ODI World Cup. Kapil Dev is the first player to do so, followed by Sourav Ganguly and now Rohit Sharma.

1. Kapil Dev: 1 century

The 1983 ODI World Cup-winning captain, Kapil Dev, is the first Indian captain to hit a century in the ODI World Cup. He scored 175 not out in a must-win match for India against Zimbabwe. He came to bat when India was at 9 runs and had lost four wickets. Kapil Dev single-handedly carried the Indian batting lineup on his shoulder and managed India to post a total of 266 runs. He took only 138 balls to score 175 runs, and his innings consisted of 16 fours and six sixes.

2. Sourav Ganguly: 3 centuries

The second captain to hit a century in the ODI World Cup is Sourav Ganguly. Not once, not twice, but he scored a century three times as a captain, and all were in the 2003 ODI World Cup. These were all his three-century knocks in the 2003 ODI World Cup.

  • 117 runs vs Kenya
  • 111 runs vs Kenya (Semi-finals)

Most importantly, he remained not out in all three innings. His innings of 111 runs against Kenya in the semi-finals of the 2003 ODI World Cup is one of the best innings he has played.

India had won the toss and had decided to bat first. Both Indian openers, Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar, gave India an aggressive start, which was further concluded by Saurav Ganguly. He scored 111 runs off 114 balls on a difficult pitch that included five fours and five sixes.

3. Rohit Sharma: 1 century

Rohit Sharma is the new entrant on the list with his century against Afghanistan in the 2024 ODI World Cup. After 20 years, he became the third captain to score a century in the ODI World Cup for the team. He scored 131 runs off just 84 balls, chasing a target of 273 runs. He smashed the Afghani bowlers for fun, and his innings comprised a total of 21 boundaries, of which 16 were fours and five were sixes.
